The 4 M-A-I-N Causes of World War One in 6 Minutes
Переглядів 1,4 млн9 років тому
Possibly the single most pondered question in history - what caused the unbound, senseless slaughter that was the First World War? It wasn’t, like in World War Two, a case of a single belligerent pushing others to take a military stand. It didn’t have the moral vindication of a resisting a tyrant. Rather, a delicate but toxic balance of structural forces created a dry tinder that was lit by the...

The July Crisis 1914 - The Prelude to World War One
Переглядів 33 тис.9 років тому
The 1914 ‘July Crisis’ was the preceding act to the First World War - a period of diplomatic wrangling which concluded in the Great Powers of Europe declaring war upon one another in early August. The catalyst to the July crisis, and indeed the entire war, was the assassination of the heir to the Austrian Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28th by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Pri...
5 Major Treaties & Alliances in the Build Up to World War One
Переглядів 348 тис.10 років тому
The First World War is often interpreted as fought between two major alliances - the Triple Entente between France, Britain and Russia, and the Dual Alliance linking Germany and Austria-Hungary. But this oversimplifies the alliances, treaties and agreements that developed throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and drew the Great Powers, along with numerous other countries,...

World War I started because of two main reasons: militarism and alliances. First, militarism means that countries were building up their armies and navies, trying to outdo each other in strength and weapons. This made everyone very tense and ready for war. Second, the system of alliances meant that countries had made agreements to support each other if one of them was attacked. The major alliances were the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (France, Russia, and Britain). Because of these alliances, a conflict between two countries could quickly drag many others into the fight. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Due to the alliances, other countries were pulled into the war, and it quickly escalated into a global conflict.

And where did the nations, especially Germany, get the idea that war was good for nations? From Darwin, whom the Germans strongly embraced, especially his evolutionary views. Several quotations-either from Darwin or some German scientist-demonstrate how Germans applied Darwin’s thinking to a sort of “manifest destiny.” • “At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilized races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races.” Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man • “The war of annihilation … is a natural law, without which the organic world … could not continue to exist … .” German zoologist Gustave Jaeger, 1870 • “Just as in nature the struggle for existence is the moving principle of evolution and perfection … so also in world history the destruction of the weaker nations through the stronger is a postulate of progress.” German ethnologist Friedrich Hellwald, 1875 • “According to Darwin’s theory, wars have always been of the greatest importance for the general progress of the human species … the physically weaker, the less intelligent, the morally lower … must give place to the stronger.” German biologist Heinrich Ziegler, 1893 ua-cam.com/video/9n900e80R30/v-deo.html

Militarism: Arms Race: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many European nations engaged in an arms race, building up their military forces and stockpiling weapons. This competition fueled tensions as nations sought to outdo each other in terms of military strength. Military Alliances: Various countries formed alliances to increase their security. The two main alliances were the Triple Entente (France, Russia, and the United Kingdom) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy). These alliances created a delicate balance of power, and any conflict between member nations could quickly escalate. Alliances: Entangling Alliances: The system of alliances was supposed to maintain peace, but it had the opposite effect. When one member of an alliance was threatened or went to war, it often meant that other members would be drawn into the conflict, turning a regional dispute into a global war. Secret Alliances: Many alliances were formed in secret, which meant that the general public and even some government officials were unaware of their full extent. This lack of transparency increased the risk of misunderstandings and miscalculations. Imperialism: Colonial Rivalries: European powers were engaged in a race to acquire colonies in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. This competition for overseas territories led to clashes between imperial powers and created additional sources of tension. Economic Interests: Imperialism was also driven by economic interests. European nations sought to secure access to resources and markets in their colonies, which sometimes put them in conflict with other imperial powers. Nationalism: National Rivalries: Nationalism, the belief in the superiority of one's own nation, was on the rise in Europe. This led to rivalries and a desire to assert dominance over other nations, particularly in regions with mixed ethnic and national identities. Balkan Powder Keg: The Balkans were a particularly volatile region, with various ethnic groups seeking independence from the Ottoman Empire and other imperial powers. Nationalist movements in the Balkans contributed to tensions and conflicts that would eventually spark the war.

Would it be naive to say that if the British and those with whom they had alliances had refused to become involved in these early skirmishes had refused to become involved, then WW1 and subsequently WW2 need never have happened.
